Redundancy payments and tax: what salon owners and small employers need to know

Making redundancies can be one of the most stressful parts of running a business, especially for salon owners managing rising costs, staffing pressure and cash flow challenges at the same time.

A lot of business owners are surprised to learn that genuine redundancy payments can usually be paid tax free up to £30,000, while other termination payments such as holiday pay, wages and notice pay are still processed through payroll and taxed as normal.

For smaller employers, the financial pressure of redundancies often goes beyond the actual payment itself. Businesses may already be dealing with reduced bookings, lower cash flow, supplier costs and operational restructuring. Without proper planning, redundancies can quickly create additional financial stress both within the business and personally for the salon owner’s.

It’s also important to remember that support is available. In some situations, welfare counselling and support services provided by employers can qualify for a tax exemption where conditions are met. Additional support may also be available through welfare systems and local services for both staff and business owners affected by financial pressure during restructuring periods.

Handling redundancies properly is not just about compliance. It is about protecting the business, supporting people fairly and creating stability while the business rebuilds.
