Do You Have to Register for VAT If You Go Over the Threshold?

If your business temporarily exceeds the VAT registration threshold, you may not need to register immediately.

HMRC allows businesses to apply for an exception from VAT registration where turnover rises above £90,000 but is expected to fall back below the deregistration threshold shortly afterwards.

This commonly applies where turnover increases due to a one-off project, seasonal income spike or delayed invoicing.

The exception must be approved by HMRC and requested within 30 days of exceeding the threshold.

Businesses expecting continued growth will still be required to register.
